Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure done to exfoliate the skin. In this procedure, our professional will use a sterile scalpel to gently remove the top layer of the skin along with the fine vellus hairs more commonly called “peach fuzz.” The process stimulates the body’s healing processes and encourages them to send nutrients to the new and newly exposed skin cells.
This is particularly effective on dry skin that has a large accumulation of dead skin cells. By removing such skin, our professional will unveil healthy and unblemished new skin. It can, thus, reduce such blemishes as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and age spots. The procedure can be done on its own or along with another treatment.
Most clients will not need an anesthetic; many people say dermaplaning feels like shaving one’s legs. The treatment is performed in the comfort of our office. The skin may look somewhat pink but will quickly return to its normal color. It will, however, be more sensitive to sunlight than normal, so the client should avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen when outside.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Just about any healthy adult with realistic expectations is a good candidate. Since no medications or other chemicals are involved, dermaplaning is safe for pregnant or nursing women. On the other hand, it is not recommended for everyone. That’s one of the reasons why a consultation is so important.
What is the Difference Between Dermaplaning and Dermabrasion?
While both dermaplaning and dermabrasion involve exfoliating the skin, dermabrasion is significantly more aggressive. Dermaplaning can be done without an anesthetic, but dermabrasion requires the administration of a local anesthetic. As you can imagine, many people prefer dermaplaning over dermabrasion, as it still delivers amazing results without the downsides of a more invasive treatment.
