The cosmetic world is a buzz with all kinds of different laser procedures these days. Many of these treatments target your skin in specific areas of your body. Some laser treatments are more generalized than others. The point of using a laser to improve your skin is typically to remove hair so that ingrown hairs and other forms of irritation do not occur. While the use of lasers for hair removal is not new, the industry is constantly improving on the laser technology being used. New lasers hit the market which do more intricate work than the ones formerly employed.
What is important is that patients should understand that there are a few important rules to follow when preparing for laser procedures, especially laser hair removal. Each laser skin treatment will tend to have some rather specific pre-treatment instructions that you will need to abide by for best results. The following are some fairly common laser pre-treatment instructions you should become familiar with and prepare to follow at our physician’s recommendation.
Do Not Wear Skin Creams or Makeup
Prior to the laser skin treatment, you do not want to use skin cream or makeup on your skin. Some people forget this and come to their appointment wearing makeup. Please do not do this, because this can negatively affect the laser’s ability to perform the procedure on your skin. Any makeup or skin cream you have put on must be removed prior to the procedure to ensure best results.
Keep Your Skin Clean
On top of not wearing any skin cream or makeup to your appointment, you will want to also make sure your skin is clean. The area of skin you will have work done on by a laser must be made clean prior to the procedure. It is important to clean the area of skin with a 70-percent alcohol solution. This will help to remove impurities, bacteria and anything else that may hinder the effectiveness of the laser treatment.
This is an important step to remember at least four weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. You will want to avoid sun-tanning or self-tanners for at least four weeks, maybe longer for some body parts. When you have to go out in the sunlight, you will want to use sunscreen. Be certain to use a sunscreen product that is SPF 30 or higher. Also be sure that the sunscreen you are using will not cause a breakout on your skin. Testing sunscreen on a patch of skin prior to application can help determine how your skin reacts to the product in question.
